Utility Stores Mobile Unit
Keeping in view poverty and inflation in Pakistan, the Utility Stores Corporation was established in July 1971. For decades, it ran more than 4,000 utility stores across the country, where poor and deserving people received special discounts on food items. In March 2024, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif launched Mobile Utility Stores — a fleet of mobile units meant to deliver subsidized essentials at neighbourhood level. However, the Utility Stores Corporation formally ceased operations on 31 July 2025, so the mobile units are now defunct. This article explains what was announced, what the service offered, and why it closed.
Through these mobile units, people could buy clean, healthy and nutritious products at relatively cheap prices. Under the 2024 announcement, the federal government planned a fleet of mobile units to provide food items at reasonable prices to millions of people, with a complete record of purchasers preserved. These units operated during the Ramadan relief drives of 2024 and 2025.

Discount on items
Under the 2024 Ramadan relief package, the government announced special discounts on essential items at Mobile Utility Stores. The announced relief included per-kilo subsidies on flour and ghee, along with reduced prices on other daily-use items. These discounts applied only during the program’s operation in 2024–2025 and are no longer available since the Utility Stores Corporation closed in July 2025.
Eligible individuals could purchase ration-related items at concessional rates from these mobile units while the program was active.

In 2024, the government launched a new method of supplying goods through Mobile Utility Stores. People no longer needed to travel far, as mobile units delivered food items at the neighbourhood level. The Prime Minister announced that during Ramadan, these mobile units would provide relief packages to poor families throughout the holy month.
In addition to fixed locations, mobile unit trucks served different areas with affordable items. The authorities used modern technology to determine truck locations, and a mobile app provided complete guidance about the units. This service ran during 2024 and 2025, but ended when the Utility Stores Corporation ceased operations on 31 July 2025.

Eligibility Criteria
The eligibility criteria for discounts at Mobile Utility Stores (2024–2025) were similar to other Government of Pakistan aid programs.
- Families with a poverty score below 40 could benefit from the mobile units.
- People with a monthly income of Rs 60,000 or less could also shop at these units.
- Those who had travelled abroad or had valuable property registered in their name were not eligible.
- Only those whose records were already available with the Utility Stores Corporation could purchase from them.
- Eligible families received subsidized essential items through the program while it was active.

During the program’s operation, checking eligibility for Mobile Utility Stores was simple.
People would open their mobile’s message option, type their National Identity Card number without dashes, and send it to 8123. They would then receive an SMS confirming whether they were eligible to purchase from the mobile units. This 8123 service was discontinued when the Utility Stores Corporation closed in July 2025.
