Rooftop Hydroponics Project – A Modern Farming Revolution
Punjab is set to launch its first-ever Rooftop Hydroponics Project, marking a new step toward modern urban farming in the province.
Under this initiative:
- 280 to 350 plants can be grown on a two-marla roof.
- More than 10 types of vegetables can be cultivated.
- Production can increase up to 32 times compared to traditional methods.
- 10 pilot projects will be launched in Lahore.
- Housing societies will be engaged for implementation.
This modern farming system allows families to grow fresh vegetables at home using special structures and polythene sheets. It promotes food security, saves water, and increases production in urban areas.
Solarization and Water Management Initiatives
Water and energy are key challenges in agriculture. To address this, several major steps have been approved:
- Solarization of 10,000 diesel tube wells.
- 7,100 agricultural tube wells already solarized.
- Introduction of “ground recharge wells” for rainwater harvesting.
- Rs 500,000 subsidy on 1,000 recharge wells in Lahore, Gujranwala, and Gujarat.
- 70% subsidy on 1,000 on-farm rainwater harvesting ponds.
These measures will reduce fuel costs, save electricity, and improve underground water levels. Farmers will benefit from lower expenses and better irrigation systems.
