Benazir Nashonuma Program 8171 Shows Significant Reduction in Child Stunting in Sindh

Benazir Nashonuma Program 8171

The Benazir Nashonuma Program 8171 is delivering encouraging results in Sindh, showing measurable progress in reducing child stunting and improving maternal nutrition. The latest midline evaluation reveals a significant decline in stunting among children aged 6 to 23 months, highlighting the positive impact of targeted nutrition and social protection initiatives during the most critical phase of a child’s life.

This progress was shared during a meeting between Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah and Ms. Coco Oshiyama, Country Director of the World Food Programme (WFP) Pakistan, along with senior provincial officials.

Benazir Nashonuma Program: A Lifeline in the First 1,000 Days

The Benazir Nashonuma Program 8171 is a major conditional cash transfer initiative aimed at preventing stunting during the first 1,000 days of a child’s life — from pregnancy until the child turns two years old. This period is considered crucial for physical growth and brain Nashonuma.

According to the midline evaluation conducted by Aga Khan University, the program has achieved a 6.4 percentage point reduction in stunting among children aged 6 to 23 months. During the official briefing, a 6.3 percentage point decrease was also highlighted, confirming consistent improvement.

In addition to reducing stunting, the evaluation found:

  • Significant improvement in maternal dietary diversity
  • Reduction in the incidence of low birth weight
  • Better overall nutrition outcomes for mothers and infants

These findings show that combining financial support with nutrition-focused conditions can create real and measurable change.

Government and WFP Collaboration

The meeting at the Chief Minister’s House brought together key ministers and secretaries from the education, health, and social protection departments. The delegation from the World Food Programme included senior officials who discussed the progress and future direction of the initiative.

Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah described the results as “highly encouraging.” He emphasised that the reduction in stunting and low birth weight proves that well-planned nutrition interventions, supported by social protection measures, can significantly improve human Nashonuma indicators.

He also reaffirmed the government’s commitment to strengthening coordination between departments to expand evidence-based nutrition programs across Sindh.

Ms. Coco Oshiyama appreciated the Sindh government’s leadership and commitment, reiterating WFP’s continued support in promoting child nutrition and food security in the province.

School Meals Program: Strengthening Child Nutrition and Education

Alongside the Benazir Nashonuma Program, the meeting also reviewed progress on the five-year, $40 million School Meals Program titled “Tomorrow’s Foundation – Foundation for the Future.”

This initiative will benefit 100,000 students in 614 government schools located in Malir and Keamari districts of Karachi.

The School Meals Program aims to:

  • Provide daily nutritious meals to improve children’s health
  • Increase school attendance
  • Improve literacy through the Teaching at the Right Level (TARL) methodology
  • Restore water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) facilities
  • Develop a sustainable provincial school meals model

The Chief Minister clarified that the goal is not just to provide food but to ensure proper nutrition through an effective and long-term system.

Expanding Opportunities Through International Support

The program also benefits from support under the McGovern-Dole initiative of the United States Department of Agriculture, creating opportunities to expand the school feeding model to other districts of Sindh.

Murad Ali Shah stated that the provincial education department is actively working to monitor student and teacher attendance using digital tools, ensuring accountability and improved learning outcomes.

Investing in Nutrition Is Investing in Sindh’s Future

The success of the Benazir Nashonuma Program clearly demonstrates that strategic investments in maternal and child nutrition can lead to measurable improvements. Reducing stunting, improving maternal diets, and lowering low birth weight rates directly contribute to healthier and more productive future generations.

The Sindh government has reiterated its commitment to institutionalising school feeding and maternal nutrition initiatives through a sustainable provincial framework.

As the Chief Minister rightly stated, investing in nutrition is an investment in the future of Sindh. With continued collaboration between the provincial government and the World Food Programme, Sindh is moving toward a stronger, healthier, and more secure future for its children.
