E-Pension Portal Launched to Simplify Pension Process for Govt Employees

E-Pension Portal

For government employees in Pakistan, getting a pension approved after retirement has traditionally meant months of running between offices and standing in bank queues just to prove eligibility.

That process has now changed. The government, working with the National Database and Registration Authority (NADRA) and the Controller General of Accounts (CGA) office, has launched the E-Pension Portal, a digital system meant to cut pension processing down from months to days and remove the repeated office visits that pensioners have long complained about.

The portal was formally launched at a ceremony in Islamabad on August 20, 2026. Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb led the launch and singled out the twice-yearly fingerprint verification requirement as one of the biggest sources of delay and hardship for pensioners, saying the new system was built specifically to fix that. Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif also spoke at the event, describing the new biometric and facial verification system as a service to the pensioners who will use it.

Key features of the E-Pension Portal

Under the new digital system, employees and pensioners can benefit from the following:

  • Online Case Tracking: Pension cases can be tracked online, without needing to visit a government office to check progress.
  • Direct Bank Transfer: Pension payments can now go directly into any commercial bank account, instead of being tied to a designated National Bank branch.
  • SMS Alerts: Registered mobile numbers receive an SMS whenever a pension is released or a deduction is made.
  • Automatic CGA Transfer: Once NADRA completes a pensioner’s verification, the certificate is sent directly to the CGA office, so no separate office or bank visit is required afterward.

New biometric verification system for pensioners

Previously, pensioners had to submit a physical Life Certificate at a bank every six months to prove they were still alive and eligible to keep receiving payments.

Under the new system, this has been replaced with biometric verification:

  • Bank Branch or ATM: Pensioners can complete fingerprint verification at a bank branch or a biometric-enabled ATM once every six months.
  • Verification Through Mobile App: The government is also developing a mobile app option that would let pensioners verify from home using their phone’s camera for facial or fingerprint recognition.
  • Missed Verification Window: If verification isn’t completed within the required period, the pension account may be temporarily blocked, and it is restored once verification is done.

This ties into NADRA’s existing biometric verification infrastructure, including its CGA Pensioner Proof of Life project, which has been validating pensioner data with the Finance Division since 2020.

How to register for the E-Pension Portal

Registration isn’t something a pensioner does on their own. It works through the employee’s department:

  • Before retirement, the employee’s data is uploaded to the digital pension system by their department.
  • The required details include the CNIC, personal number, and an active mobile phone number.
  • Once data entry is complete, the employee is issued a unique Pension ID.
  • The Pension ID is then used to track pension case status and access pension-related services going forward.

Employees approaching retirement should check with their department’s accounts or admin branch to confirm this upload has been started, since the portal does not accept public sign-ups directly.
