Punjab E-Taxi Scheme Launched for the First Time in Pakistan’s History
The Punjab e-taxi scheme marks a historic step toward modern, eco-friendly, and inclusive transportation in Pakistan. For the first time in the country’s history, the Government of Punjab has introduced a large-scale electric taxi initiative aimed at creating employment opportunities, empowering women, and promoting green mobility.
The scheme has been officially inaugurated by Maryam Nawaz Sharif, setting the foundation for a new era of digital and environmentally responsible transport in the province.
Introduction to the Punjab E-Taxi Scheme
The Punjab e-taxi scheme has been launched with the vision of transforming public transport while supporting unemployed youth and women. The initiative focuses on introducing electric vehicles (EVs) as taxis to reduce fuel dependency, cut pollution, and promote clean energy solutions.
This program not only supports drivers financially but also ensures passenger safety, digital payment options, and integration with modern ride-hailing platforms.

First Phase: 1,100 Electric Vehicles
In the first phase of the Punjab e-taxi scheme, 1,100 electric vehicles will be distributed among eligible drivers. This phased rollout will help the government evaluate performance, improve operations, and expand the program in the future.
The introduction of these electric taxis will:
- Reduce air pollution
- Lower fuel costs for drivers
- Encourage the use of sustainable transportation
- Create new job opportunities
30% Quota for Women Drivers
A key highlight of the Punjab e-taxi scheme is women’s empowerment. The government has reserved a 30% quota for female drivers, ensuring equal opportunities in the transport sector.
To make the initiative more supportive for women:
- The government will pay 60% of the down payment for female drivers.
- Vehicles driven by women will have a distinct colour for easy identification.
This step promotes financial independence and provides safe and respectful employment opportunities for women across Punjab.

Safety Features and Panic Button System
Safety is a top priority in the Punjab e-taxi scheme. Every vehicle will be equipped with a panic button to ensure quick emergency response.
The panic button will be directly linked to the Punjab Safe City Authority, allowing authorities to respond immediately in case of any emergency. This feature enhances the safety of both drivers and passengers and builds trust in the system.

Integration with Ride-Hailing Platforms
To modernise operations, vehicles under the Punjab e-taxi scheme will be registered with:
- inDrive
- Yango
This integration allows drivers to receive ride requests digitally and expand their customer base. It also ensures convenience for passengers who prefer app-based booking services.
Additionally, digital payment facilities will be available, making transactions fast, safe, and transparent.
Charging Infrastructure and Fast Chargers
To support the smooth operation of electric taxis, fast charging stations will be installed at public places. This will reduce downtime and allow drivers to quickly recharge their vehicles.
The development of charging infrastructure under the Punjab e-taxi scheme reflects the government’s commitment to long-term sustainable transport solutions.
