CM Maryam Nawaz Electric Bike Scheme

Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif has approved the provision of more than 125,000 electric bikes to students across the province under the CM Electric Bike Scheme.

The chief minister has directed authorities not to collect any down payment from students and rejected proposals for charges other than the monthly installment. The Punjab government will also pay the interest and insurance costs for the bikes.

Officials agreed to a proposal for a monthly installment of around Rs. 3,000. Maryam also ordered the e-bike portal to open this week and directed authorities to ensure eligible students receive their bikes within six weeks.

The scheme will also cover government employees, departments and delivery workers, with the expansion set to roll out gradually in phases.

Students will receive helmets and safety rods free of charge, while the bikes will feature lithium iron phosphate batteries. Interested students will also receive free two-day driving training.

Who Can Apply

According to the official scheme page on the Punjab Portal, applicants must be at least 18 years old, be regular students of degree colleges or universities recognized by the Higher Education Commission (HEC), and hold a valid motorcycle learner’s permit or driving license.

The scheme maintains equal quotas for male and female students at the divisional level, with additional proportional quotas for the rest of Punjab. Where applications exceed the available quota, an e-balloting process is conducted based on the applicant’s domicile district.

These are the standing eligibility rules published by the Punjab government. Since the 125,000-bike expansion was only announced this week, students are advised to confirm final terms once the portal reopens for the current phase.

How to Apply

Applications will be submitted online through the official e-bike web portal once it opens. There is no offline route.

Students who need help completing the process can also use the Punjab IT Board’s “Maryam Ke Dastak” facility, where a registered facilitator visits the applicant at home to complete the registration. This can be booked by calling the PITB helpline or through the Maryam Ke Dastak mobile app.

For queries on the financing side, the Bank of Punjab, which manages the scheme’s monthly installments, operates a helpline at 042-111-333-267.

The Scheme’s Growth So Far

The programme did not start at 125,000 bikes. It launched with 1,000 e-bikes and 19,000 petrol bikes in its first phase, limited to five cities and requiring an advance payment. A later phase under the Chief Minister’s Youth Initiative pushed the total to 27,200 bikes issued, with 55 percent going to female applicants despite no formal women’s quota.

The current expansion marks the biggest jump yet, both in scale and in terms, with the down payment removed entirely and the scheme opened up beyond students for the first time.
